Scott Evans unseats Andrew Smith in final round of 2013 Cyprus International

Ireland’s Scott Evans remained invincible in the final round of 25th Li-Ning Winter Sun Cyprus International and claimed the crown on Sunday, January 27, 2013.
He locked horns with Andrew Smith of England and they remained head-to-head for 25 minutes in the local badminton arena of Nicosia.
The top seeded Men's Singles Irish campaigner played with great precision and sealed splendid straight-set victory with an impressive result of 21-17 and 21-11.
Though, Andrew Smith took off in perfect manner in both segments of the showdown but his fluctuated performance hit him hard in the concluding moments.
The British player unleashed a flurry of power packed strokes in beginning of the first set and gained a decent advantage.
He raised his chances of success by prevailing in next couple of rallies. He played with an authoritative approach and kept his rival at the lower end in the establishing rallies.
However, his supremacy was really short lived as Scott Evans employed an effective counterattack strategy and tipped the scale in his favour.
He started the beating just before the mid-game break and finished first half of the set with a respectable score position.
After the one-minute break, he showed consistency in his performance and kept his challenger under control.
Though, Andrew pocketed some valuable points in a row and narrowed the gap on points table but he could not proceed with same momentum in the final stage.
On the other hand, the Irish shuttler displayed good finishing skills and wrapped this segment with a decisive margin of 21-17.
The following game was relatively a one-sided affair as Scot Evans did not give his competitor even a single chance to come back.
This time he launched an intensive attack and established an unassailable lead way before the half time.
He pushed his rival in all areas of the court and piled up a mountainous figure of 11 before the announcement of interval.
The latter part of the game was also dominated by Scot Evans as he strengthened his grip in third quarter of the set and then locked the honour with an overwhelming score of 21-11.
