Scott Hairston aims for multi-year contract in free agency-MLB Update
Left fielder, Scott Hairston is looking for a multi-year deal in the free agent market.
His agent has conveyed this to the New York Mets, which is the team that might be re-signing Hairston after he played for them during the 2012 season.
Hairston was impressive in the last season, especially in the second half. He struck valuable home runs and helped the club increase the dwindling winning percentage to some extent.
Hairston was incorporated in the club by New York after signing a one-year contract with him in 2011.
After the expiry of the deal, he was re-signed by the organisation but to his disappointment, even this time around the deal consisted of only one-year.
After two years of presence in the team, Hairston is unwilling to accept another short-term agreement.
He is bent on earning a multi-year contract. His confidence in being able to achieve this from the Mets has mounted, because of the interests shown by a number of other organisations in him.
According to the sources, scores of clubs are eager to obtain Hairston from the market.
It remains to be seen as to how much they are offering him. Anything around a three-year deal along with substantial amount will most probably be acceptable for Hairston.
Even as Hairston asks for a long-term deal, he is not an expensive option for the Mets, especially considering the fact they lack players for the outfield.
If Hairston does not return to the Mets, their outfield woes will worsen. That will certainly affect their 2013 season preparations badly.
For a club like the Mets, which confronts the shortage of money, buying high profile free agents is extremely difficult. Only way they can address their roster problems is either by choosing the cheapest free agent in the market or use trade options.
Hairston is certainly an affordable free agent. For the same reason, the Mets may try their best to ink an agreement with him.
The fact other teams are also eager to attain Hairston can make the task for New York harder.
The Mets will be looking to confirm Hairston for their 2013 expedition before he disappears from the market.
