Scott Hairston enjoys confidence of Philadelphia Phillies’ management - MLB Update
Although Scott Hairston has not been signed yet, the Philadelphia Phillies’ management view him as someone who boasts credentials to live up to the requirements of their club.
Even as he is just a platoon player, the Phillies’ general manager, Ruben Amaro Jr. has rated him highly.
He believes among the available options, he is arguably the best one for handling the corner field.
Hairston is a free agent at the moment. He played for the New York Mets last season. His contributions at the plate, especially late in the season, were outstanding.
The Phillies have explained time-and-again that they need a powerful batter in their line-up, as opposed to someone who is just good with regard to defence.
Hairston can turn out to be an ideal option in many ways, firstly, because he is inexpensive.
Secondly, he is going through such a phase of his career, where he can produce extra-ordinary shows at the plate on a consistent basis.
Amaro has repeated the same thing, saying Hairston was outstanding during the last season.
Along with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, he can prove to be a healthy addition in the line-up.
“That's a good question. If I can get any one of those guys, I probably take Hairston, although I wouldn't necessarily consider him an everyday player. First, you would think he would come at a reasonable price. He has good splits against left-handed pitchers,
which is important. The Phillies also tried to acquire him in the past, which is important to remember. The Cubs would have to eat most of the remaining $36 million on Soriano's contract,” Amaro said.
As per reports, the Phillies are negotiating with the Chicago Cubs for acquiring Alfonso Soriano through a trade.
However, doing so will require the club offer quality prospects from their Minor League system.
Most probably, the Phillies will be unable to meet the asking price of the Cubs, considering the fact that they have already sent some of their arms to the Minnesota Twins in the trade of Ben Revere.
It will be interesting to see which club Hairston plays for during the 2013 season.
