Scott Hairston shines as New York Mets defeat Philadelphia Phillies 11-2 – MLB Recap
New York Mets’ left-fielder, Scott Hairston had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit five RBIs and one homer with a batting average of .258 in the Mets’ 11-2 win against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field, New York on July 16.
The Mets added their initial run during the very first inning and took a 1-0 lead when Daniel Murphy reached towards first base on an infield single and Hairston scored a single run. In the second inning, Ben Francisco was grounded out to second base, Raul
Ibanez and Carlols Ruiz both flied out to centre-field.
In the third inning, Hairston doubled off left-field while Jonathon Niese and Justin Turner both scored two runs jointly to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. Angel Pagan hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field and Nick Evans posted one run during the fourth inning
to take the Mets’ lead 4-0.
The Mets posted three runs in the fifth inning to advance their lead 7-0. Murphy struck a solo homer (400 feet) to right-centre field. Jason Bay added one run when Evans tripled towards deep right-field and the third run was taken by Evans on the single-run
shot of Ruben Tejada towards centre-field.
During the sixth inning, the batters got out without adding any run. Chase Utley was grounded out to first base, Ryan Howard flied out to centre-field and Francisco struck-out swinging at the top of the sixth inning. The Mets’ batters also got out at the
bottom of the sixth inning as Hairston popped out to third base and Murphy grounded out to short-stop position.
Niese pitched well for the Mets as he permitted just two runs on six hits in his seven inning pitches and struck-out six batters on his 103 pitches. He pitched the throws with an ERA of 3.73 and allowed only one walk.
The Phillies got off the mark in the seventh inning by posting two runs to cut their deficit when Ibanez and Ruiz both scored on the double play grounder towards short-stop. On the other side, the Mets’ batters contributed four runs to take an 11-2 lead
at the bottom of the seventh inning. Hairston homered (441 feet) to left-field while Pagan, Turner and Lucas Duda each made one run to end their four-run campaign.
The Mets were able to tie the three-game series 1-1 after winning a comfortable battle.
