Scott Harris named as Chicago Cubs’ new director of baseball operations – MLB News

While the Chicago Cubs on Thursday were reviewing a host of other matters, they named Scott Harris as the club’s new director of baseball operations. The 25-year old Harris comes with experience of two years as coordinator of Major League operations for Major League Baseball.
No immediate comments were made on the move as the Cubs were deliberating over other issues as well.
He was previously associated with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010 and the Washington Nationals in 2008 as an intern. With MLB, on the other hand, he provided transaction support, analysis and helped and managed different procedural operations.
Earlier, the Cubs had also appointed Rob Deer as the club’s assistant hitting coach. He was previously a team-mate of the manager Dale Sveum while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1986 to 1990.
Rob is the first official assistant hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs. Not that there has not been any coaches who assisted the hitting coaches in the past. However, this move is an official one.
The Cubs' general manager Jed Hoyer has his views to share about officially appointing Rob as the assistant hitting coach.
"Candidly, I'm sort of upset, looking back on the years in Boston and San Diego, I feel it's a position I should've added long ago," Hoyer said. "Dale has a long relationship with Rob and speaks incredibly highly of him. Our interactions with him are real positive. We're excited to add him. He can really assist James well and add a nice element to our clubhouse."
As was reported, it had been manager Dale Sveum’s decision to add him to the staff as an assistant hitting coach – having to serve with hitting coach James Rowson. "[Sveum] didn't know I wanted to do this," Deer said, "and that's how it started."
Other than that, the Cubs have to deal with the matter pertaining to the arbitration-eligible players. Friday is the deadline and the name that has come to the fore is that of Ian Stewart. The arbitration-eligible player has to wait until 11 pm to see what the decision of the Cubs will be.
