Scott Hartnell scores a pair in Phildadelphia Flyers win over the Carolina Hurricanes
Despite the absence of the suspended Danny Briere, the Philadelphia Flyers came up with a solid performance to get a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, 1 November.
How it happened
The Flyers opened the scoring midway through the first period when Scott Hartnell scored the first of his two goals on the night. After Jeff Carter threw a puck on net, Hartnell collected the rebound and,
with his back to goal fired a backhand high over a sprawling Justin Peters in the Carolina goal.
The Hurricanes tied things up early in the second period through Patrick Dwyer who got his third of the season, but the Flyers restored their advantage later in the period when Claude Giroux scored his
seventh of the season on a Flyers power play.
Six and a half minutes into the third and Hartnell had his second of the game after tipping in a point shot from defenceman Kimmo Timonen. Joe Corvo got his first of the season with 27 seconds left as
the Hurricanes made a late surge, but it was too little too late.
What they're saying
Hartnell was in good spirits after making a significant contribution to the team's victory, but missed having Briere on the other wing despite his success.
"Danny caught a tough break with his suspension," he said. "We miss him. Obviously, he's been a big part of our team so far. We came out and played hard, we played tough, we stuck through it there and
got the win, that's the main thing."
Hurricanes head coach, Peter Laviolette shared praise of his forward, Hartnell, saying that the 28-year-old's confidence continues to grow.
"He's played well; his line has played well for a good stretch here," Laviolette said. "Through the end of the season, the playoffs, and picking it up in training camp, he seems to be enjoying the game
and his place to be is in front of the net. I think he's got a clearer head this year. He's coming in and just enjoying hockey and being at the rink with his teammates."
The Flyers improve to 7-4-1 giving them a two point lead in the Atlantic division. They play the New York Rangers at home on Thursday, 4 November.
The Hurricanes (5-6-0) have now lost three of their last four as they get set to play the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
