Scott Henry wins Kazakhstan Open in the playoff
Scott Henry, who drained a 25-foot birdie on the 18th hole of the Kazakhstan Open, to force the game to enter the sudden death playoffs, birdied the second extra hole, beating HP Bacher.
The Kazakhstan Open, also known as the European Challenge Tour’s ‘Major’, was held at Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty, and featured some of the prominent names on the tour.
The former Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship winner played brilliantly, right from the start of the prestigious tournament.
He kicked off his first round by shooting five birdies and two eagles for an impressive 66. He then cemented his position by posting rounds of 67 in each of the next two rounds.
He started off his final round campaign with a two-stroke deficit against the overnight leader, Alexander Levy.
Five birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine took him to the top of the leaderboard early in his round.
However, he lost his momentum on the back nine, as he parred seven of the first eight holes, along with a double bogey on the par-five 15th hole.
Standing on the 18th tee, he was one stroke behind Bacher. After reaching the green on two shots, he had a strong challenge ahead of him, as he needed a difficult 25-foot putt for a birdie.
It was the only chance that he had to challenge his rival on the extra holes. He kept his nerves under control and rolled in the ball for a successful birdie.
“That is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life,” Henry said. “It was by far the biggest moment of my career and it felt incredible”.
On the second extra hole, Bacher missed an easy four-foot par putt. Meanwhile, Henry two-putted and claimed the biggest victory of his career.
“It’s the biggest win of my life, no doubt about that,” said Henry. “It was my father’s birthday today and I was thinking about him all day to be honest. ...He has played such a big part in my career and is always trying to get the best out of me, I think
this win was for him”.
