Scott McCarron ready for golf again
Currently, Scott McCarron is taking some time off relaxing with his family and friends. Anyone would enjoy such a break. If one is a professional golf player, he would enjoy it a lot. The only problem is that, Scott would rather be in Boston or Chicago playing
golf.
He says it’s good to be home but it is depressing that he’s not competing for the FedEx cup. McCarron, who is a 16 year PGA Tour veteran hasn’t played the last three weeks after he wasn’t successful in qualifying for the PGA Tour’s FedEx cup playoffs. The
La Quinta resident didn’t get a chance to go after the $10 Million bonus of the Cup and wasn’t too happy about that. Scott has played in the playoffs in 2008 and 2009, and was obviously looking forward to it this year as well. He didn’t compete in 2007, which
was the inaugural season, due to an elbow injury.
Luck wasn’t quite on McCarron’s side as he wasn’t one of the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup points race. All the 125 players successfully made it to the Barclays, the first of the four playoff events. The Barclays took place from August 26th
to August 29th in New Jersey and was won by Matt Kuchar. Playing the Wyndham Invitational in August, Scott just needed birdies on the final two holes to qualify the FedEx list. Unfortunately, he scored two pars instead. These shots landed him on
number 130 on the points list and hence out of the FedEx Cup. Not only did he fail to play in the Barclay’s, Scott was without a tour event for five weeks. It was like a month or more of a vacation he really didn’t wish for.
This bad news was made even worse because of the fact that in the last two months, McCarron was playing his best golf of the year.
“I have been playing some really good golf the last four or five weeks,” he said. “If I had played well on Sunday, I had a chance (to win) at Greenbrier and Turning Stone. And at Reno, the last nine holes were a disaster (a final-round 81 after leading after
54 holes). To shoot that score (43 on the back nine) in that tournament on a course I have played so often was disappointing”.
The sunny months of August and July were really in contrast to the first six months of the year for the former UCLA star. The 45-year old golfer has not made eight of the first twelve events of the year. During this time, Scott worked on altering his swing.
It was also in summer that McCarron had a bit of an argument with World Number two, Phil Mickelson.
McCarron accused Mickelson of ‘cheating’ since he said that he still uses wedges that are not permitted because of a legal technicality. Phil was one of the four players at Torrey Pines, who were using a Ping-Eye 2 Wedge. This wedge had square grooves and
was made twenty-years ago. Due to a new USGA rule, grooves like those were not allowed on the PGA Tour. When asked later, Scott ruled out any news about him accusing Phil of cheating, but he just wanted to resolve the issue and make the game fair for all the
players.
To end this year, Scott has made the cut in seven of his final eight tournaments. McCarron didn’t let the FedEx cup disappointment get to him and he has finished at or near the top of the leader board in three events. He said that he is playing good and
that he is in the state where he isn’t after anything, and is comfortable with having fun.
Right now McCarron is on the 127th position on the Money list which he really wants to improve. Only during his first year, he was on the 128th position. Other than that, he has always been in the top 125. With the FedEx Cup ending
soon, McCarron has signed up for all five official events remaining on the PGA Tour this year. With resting for a month or so, Scott McCarron is now determined to play some good golf and be in the top 125 once again.
