Scott McGillivray dominates Men’s 50m butterfly heat: Day one – Western Canadian Championships
Scott McGillivray of CASC met expectations of his coach by dominating the qualifying rounds of Men’s 50m butterfly in the 16 and under class on foremost day of the 2012 Speedo Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg, Canada on Thursday, February 16.
The 16-year-old McGillivray was the hot favourite swimmer in the short course butterfly event. With his incomparable efforts in the shortest butterfly race, he entered the final round as the fastest swimmer.
He confronted strong battle from Bryce Kananowicz of MANTA throughout the event, but with his stupendous stroke, he managed to outperform him over the finishing end for top position.
McGillivray’s quickest response to the start provided him competitive edge over his fellow swimmers. His forceful dive combined with his unimaginable strokes played a vital role in his feat.
With his flawless efforts throughout the 50m discipline, McGillivray remained untouchable throughout the swim and proved his eligibility for the top qualifying position by producing a time of 25.41 seconds.
He stayed 0.05 seconds ahead of Kananowicz, who occupied second fastest qualification spot of the swim by ending his race in a time of 25.46 seconds. The 16-year-old Kananowicz was 0.24 seconds faster from Nicolaas Dekker of RAPID, who reached the final round as third fastest swimmer with an effort of 25.70 seconds.
In the meantime, Dillon Perron of UMAN excelled in the equivalent event in Men’s 17 and over category. The 20-year-old Perron remained prominently ahead of his challengers and entered the final round by reporting 25.18 seconds.
He was followed by Greg Laughlin of SFU, who stayed 0.22 seconds slower from his former finisher and hit the wall with a timing of 25.40 seconds. The 22-year-old Laughlin remained just 0.07 seconds faster from his subsequent competitor, Thomas Jobin of CASC, who qualified into the playoff by submitting an effort of 25.47 seconds.
McGillivray was delighted with his scintillating struggle in the butterfly heat whereas he aroused hopes of his fans by expressing that he will try to capture of gold medal of the position in the final round. In addition, the session concluded after the conclusion of all events.
