Scott Parker signs contract extension at West Ham United
West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker today committed his long-term future to the club after he signed a contract that will see him stay at Upton Park until 2014.
The 29-year-old had been the subject of much speculation over the summer linking him with West Ham’s English Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. Spurs had seen a bid rejected for the player, with West Ham chairman David Sullivan adamant he would not be leaving the club.
Parker has now killed off such conjecture after signing his new deal, which has the option of extending his stay by another 12 months.
'Wanted to stay'
He told his club’s official website that: "I am just absolutely delighted to have signed the contract. Everyone knows I enjoy playing my football here. I really wanted to stay here, give it a shot and see what can happen. I just want to do the best for West Ham and I can't wait for Saturday against Chelsea."
Parker added that the transfer speculation had brought ‘stress’ but said that: "With the transfer window there is all this big hype. From the outset I always knew this was where I was going to be. The owners came out and spoke last season and I am more than happy."
Parker has been at West Ham since June 2007, when he joined from Newcastle United for a fee of seven million pounds. Though he has not won any trophies with the club, he was voted by fans to be their player of the year for both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.
Despite a difficult start to the season that has seen West Ham lose all three of their league matches so far, Parker said that: "We are looking forward. We have had a tough start. In saying that, we have shown some good things this year but we need to do that for 90 minutes. I am sure that it won't be long before we start clicking and you can see the best of us."
