Scott Piercy claims victory at the RBC Canadian Open
Scott Piercy claimed his second PGA Tour title, as a three-under par final round of 67 left him one shot clear of Robert Garrigus and William McGirt on 16-under par in the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
It was amazing to watch Piercy recording 67 for the third time in a row, which showed a high level of consistency by the 33-year-old American.
He entered the final day with a third place in hand and surged into contention with a run of four consecutive birdies starting from the second hole.
A couple of bogeys on the 8th and 14th hole forced him to share the top spot with Garrigus. However, he did not allow that to happen for an extended period of time and took back the sole lead with another birdie on the 15th hole.
Meanwhile, McGirt also surged to the top of the leaderboard. However, he failed to hold onto his nerves and bogeyed the final hole, which dragged him down to share the second place.
"I've been playing good for a while now, and you just need a couple of good breaks here or there," Piercy said. "I felt like I got a couple of good breaks and continued to play solid, and I'm kind of speechless. I'm really excited to be the champion".
The victory also earned him a place in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, scheduled next week.
Therefore, he has now changed his plans of appearing at the Reno-Tahoe Open and expressed his apology to the Director of the tournament for not defending the title this year.
“Getting into Akron next week is a little change of plans,” he said. “I was supposed to be in Reno defending. So I have to apologize to Reno. The tournament director there has been a good friend of mine and I've worked closely with her. I know she's excited
for me, and she'd want me to be in Ohio, too, if I could”.
The win also allowed him to add 500 FedEx points to his profile and he moved to the 13th position in the standings for this year.
