Scott Piercy leads RBC Canadian Open on day one
Scott Piercy carded a sparkling eight-under par 62 to lead the field by a single shot, heading into the second round of the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
Despite Piercy’s matching the course record at 62, his sterling efforts will still be fearfully looking over his shoulder at a chasing pack just one stroke behind.
The 33-year-old American, who won his only PGA Tour title at the Reno-Tahoe Open last year, will go into the second round with a single shot advantage over William McGirt and Greg Owen.
“Hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens today,” he said. “I was rolling the ball well, and obviously you gotta make some putts, too. I hit it solid out there. I think I only missed a couple greens, and ball striking round here with the rough being so
penal is a must to shoot well”.
He also stated that the greens were receptive and remained the same throughout day. Moreover, the winds did not have any effect on his game. However, precision was required sometimes when shots were being played from down in the valley.
According to him, he did not feel comfortable when he played the opening hole of the day. However, he started getting used to the conditions as the round progressed.
“You know, in all honesty I didn't feel like I had a very good feel for the golf course teeing up on the first hole today,” he said. “I flew in late on Tuesday, played the Pro Am so I'm kind of jet lagged playing, and kind of scraped through yesterday”.
The highlight of his performance includes eagles on each of the par-five holes present on the course – the 4th and 17th hole. In addition to that, he also sank five birdies against a lone bogey.
Adam Hadwin was the leading Canadian player who registered a four-under par 66 and tied for the 12th position.
Sean O'Hair, the defending champion, recorded one of the worst scores of the day. He tied for the 144th spot after a five-over par 75. There were only four players who shot worse than him.
