Scott Quigg-Rendall Munroe title bout ends via technical draw decision due to head clash–Boxing News
The much anticipated bout between Scott Quigg, the BBBC British super bantamweight champion, and Rendall Munroe, the former WBA International super bantamweight champion, for the interim WBA World super bantamweight title, ended in a disappointing technical
draw decision after a head clash during the 12-round bout held on June 16, 2012.
Scott and Rendall were scheduled to headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Ricky Hatton of Hatton Promotions. The ring for the extravaganza was set up at Velodrome arena situated in Manchester, Lancashire, United Kingdom.
The night was co-headlined by the 12-round light middleweight bout between Ryan Rhodes and Sergey Rabchenko for the vacant EBU (European) light middleweight title. The Sky TV special Saturday night edition also witnessed Richard Towers take on Gregory Tony
in a 12-round heavyweight clash for the vacant EBU-EU (European Union) heavyweight title.
Nobody in the heavily filled arena expected a head clash to interfere the bout between two of the best British pugilists but the scenario did occur and eventually quashed the crowd’s anticipations.
Scott, 23, was entering in his career’s 25th bout and boasted an undefeated streak. The young Lancashire lad has nailed 17 of his opponents by knockout and proudly resides at his country’s number one divisional rank.
Moreover, Quigg was coming from a successful title defence bout against Jamie Arthur and Jason Booth and therefore was expected to put forth his fellow countryman Rendall an epic performance.
His Saturday night opponent, Munroe, 32, was entering in his career’s 27th bout and boasted 24 wins. Ranked as the second best super bantamweight in Britain, Rendall was all boosted up to dethrone young Scott from the number one spot by grabbing the interim
WBA world super bantamweight gold.
Unfortunately, for both men, dreams did not come true and the bout ended in a technical decision draw after the vicious head crash which inflicted substantial damage to Munroe’s right eye.
As a result of the accidental head butt, Rendall got a deep cut above the right eye which was later on after careful medical assistance sealed by nine stitches. The incident took place in the 43rd second of the third round and as per the boxing rules and
regulations, was denoted a draw since four-round limit was not crossed.
After the bout both men shared their intense urge to enter the ring again in a rematch bout. Rendall despite receiving a lethal injury stated, “I can’t wait to go again. It’s a game of these things happen and you just have to go with it.”
Quigg, on the other hand, also commented, “We both want to prove who is number one and the point is not proven so we both want to fight again. I felt in control. The second round I was just getting into it and everything was going to plan and I believe it
was going to be my night.”
The date and venue for the rematch bout will be announced soon once Rendall fully recuperates from his injury.
