Scott Redding returns to Moto 2 after tragic Tomizawa crash
Suter’s Scott Redding has decided to return to Moto 2 despite the aftermath of his crash with Japan’s Shoya Tomizawa, which resulted in the death of the 19-year-old racer.
The rising prodigy, who won the opening race of the 2010 Moto 2 season, was unavoidably hit by Redding’s motorbike during a collision and later died from fatal injuries. The tragedy cast a profound gloom over the motorcycle world, once again raising questions about the relative safety of Moto Racing.
Redding, who suffered from a laceration to his back, recovered successfully. But getting over the trauma of the accident is a heavy-hearted burden for the 17 year-old Briton. “I was gutted when I found out the news about Tomi and it still hasn't really sunk in yet," Redding lamented, according to motogp.com. "He was a really good guy and will definitely be missed in the paddock and on the track. My thoughts are with his family, friends and team, who all suffered a huge loss at the weekend.”
For Redding, the memory of the accident itself is a blur. “I don't remember anything about the crash; one minute I was on the gas as normal and the rest is just a blank. I haven't seen the crash on television, and I don't want to, but I do know that I was very lucky to escape serious injury.”
Though family and friends have offered Redding unconditional support for taking a break from the Moto 2 circuit, his decision to return to the track in time for the Aragon, Spain Grand Prix is a welcome one, and one which is definitive of the youngster’s resilience to persist through hard times. Captaining a positive attitude, Redding states, “The wound to my back is already improving, and I'm determined to get back on the bike as soon as possible. We have a one-day test at Valencia next week, which will give me a chance to check everything is okay with my back, before heading to Aragon for the next race.”
The Gran Premio A-Style De Aragon will take place on 19 September.
