Scott Stallings eager to return to defend the Greenbrier Classic title despite lingering injuries
Scott Stallings, the defending champion at this year’s Greenbrier Classic, is undergoing therapy sessions in order to make a return to the field of the Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs. The tournament is scheduled to start from Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Early this year, Stallings suffered a back injury while he was travelling via an airplane. According to him, he felt asleep during his journey in an inappropriate posture that caused him pain in the back.
"I kind of fell asleep in a funky position and just kind of a comedy of errors when it comes to injuries this year," he said.
He started off the 2012 PGA Tour campaign tied for the 22nd position in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Right after two weeks, he started feeling pain in his ribs. His latest injury spoiled his season, as he managed to make the cut only thrice in the 15 events that he played.
Moreover, his best finish came in the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide Insurance, where he tied for the 25th position.
"The year's been less than ideal," said Stallings, who earned his first PGA Tour victory with a playoff on No. 18 at the 2011 Greenbrier Classic.
"I played four tournaments healthy the whole season and with the rib injury in January and then I herniated a low disk in my back in Hartford, kind of completely out of nowhere".
During the Masters Tournament this year, he was on medication in order to remain healthy. However, it was not enough to enable him to contend for a win. In fact, he did that just for survival in the event.
"I played the Masters on purely pain medicine," Stallings said. "I was just trying to get through”.
Yet, he managed to make a respectable finish, as he tied for the 27th position after carding a two-par tournament score.
If looked at his recent performances and injury status, he is not in a position to successfully defend his title at Old White TPC.
However, he is eager to return to the field where he opened his winning account on the PGA Tour.
