Scott Stallings takes his second career win at the True South Classic
Scott Stallings fired a four-under par 68 for a tournament record of 24-under par 264 en route to winning the True South Classic on Sunday, July 22, 2012. It was his second career win, as he also won the Greenbrier Classic last year.
Stallings recorded five birdies against a lone bogey to finish two strokes ahead of Jason Bohn. While he was playing the final few holes of the tournament, it seemed as if the competition will get tough in the end.
However, birdies on the 16th and 17th hole sucked all the suspense right out of the last hole of the tournament. According to him, two birdies in a row made the tee shot on the 18th hole much easier to play.
In the meantime, Bohn birdied the last hole. However, it was not enough to catch Stallings on top of the leaderboard who finished with a par on the 18th.
“Obviously, it's a special week,” Stallings said. “Any time you win on the PGA Tour it's special. A lot of things and people went into winning this tournament and I'm very thankful”.
It was overall a great achievement while considering the fact that he had to suffer torn cartilage in his ribs early this year, followed by another injury that led him to place two herniated disks in his back.
“I hurt my confidence and hurt everything that came along with it. I learned a lot of lessons through that,” he said.
“We've got a lot of golf (remaining). I'm just happy to be playing. All the birdies and stuff are great, but at the end of the day, just to be out here and be competitive - that's all I'm really focused on”.
Billy Horschel, who stood third on the leaderboard, also praised Stallings’ performance and said that he was consistent in making putts at the right time. Whenever he looked going out of the competition, he bounced back strongly with his putter.
By and large, it was a great victory and it also earned him a place in the final major event of the year, the PGA Championship.
