Scott Strange hits rock bottom at Australian PGA Championship
There is something the matter with Scott Strange’s game lately, something strange.
Round one had been superb for the Perth-based golfer whose Celtic Manor Wales Open win happened to be a wire-to-wire. It shot him straight up there with the rest of the top 100 in the world of golf.
In round one, here at Palmer Coolum Resort, he shot six birdies without loss to a bogey. Seriously, the first round was completely bogey-free.
The tournament, however, could have turned out to be a fairytale, but received a rude awakening in just the other round.
In round two, Strange strangely never tallied a birdie at all. Moreover, to make matters stranger, the confounded par 5 fifth was blown to smithereens with a double bogey. It completely surprised our Australian, appearing as it did out of the blue.
Some less experienced players have been struggling on the fifth hole, but having lost Strange to it as well – such an experienced and talented player as he is – is genuinely lamentable.
He holed just two birdies that fateful Friday (one on the 12th and the second on the 14th) and called it a day after even-paring the last. His score stood at 1-over 73.
Talk about descending into the abyss, people. From a breathtaking 6-under 66 to one-over 73! If you thought it could not get any worse, here are round three’s results just in.
Strange’s individual leaderboard of the third round shows a grotesque 2-over 74! He seems to have loved the double bogey in the second round, so he brought it out for a bit of show and tell again on the third. Maddening you say?
Apparently not enough, says Strange and slaps a couple of bogeys in there too. Staring at us wide-eyed from the scorecard, there they are on the 11th and 15th holes.
It is the holiday season folks. With a round three like that, Strange sure is on Santa’s naughty list this Christmas. He will not be getting any top-prize, that is for sure, only T37 in his stockings.
The others down there with him are countrymen Jake Higginbottom, Nick O’Hern, and Terry Pilkadaris.
