Scott Wight signs a two-year deal with Glasgow Warriors – Rugby news
Glasgow Warriors, a professional Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) team, has signed the Melrose fly half Scott Wight on a two-year contract. Scott Wight has led the Melrose Rugby Club to lift their eighth Scottish Premiership Division One title earlier in the year.
Wight has been simply exceptional in the whole season as his most notable performance of the Scottish Premiership Division One came against Boroughmuir in February 2011. Wight was outstanding as he produced a 22 point haul in the match to put himself into
contention for a place in the senior level side. Wight’s 22 points included a try, a conversion and five penalties.
Wight has magnificently led and coupled it with his own form to lift the Melrose Sevens honours for the second consecutive year. The 25-year-old has also led the team to win the Border League and won the SRU team of the month Award for Melrose RFC.
Galashiels born Wight has expressed his gratitude and utter satisfaction on being able to join the ranks of the professional senior club. He said, “I'm thrilled to have the chance to come into the professional game with a side like Glasgow Warriors.”
Wight has termed the Warriors player development program as the key reason behind his signing the two-year deal with the squad. The former Melrose fly half said, “They've an excellent track record of helping young players fulfill their potential, and I'm
thoroughly looking forward to getting stuck in and making the most of this opportunity.”
He further added, “I'm really excited about the quality of player I'll be working with and learning from on a daily basis, and it's now about getting the head down and working hard to repay the faith that Sean and the rest of the club have shown in me.”
Warriors finished at 11th spot in the last season of Magners League and managed to win 6 of the 22 games. Glasgow Warriors head coach Sean Lineen has welcomed the signing of the talent Scottish player.
Commenting on his skills, Lineen said, “"He offers a number of excellent qualities, not least the ability to control a game from stand-off. He'll also bring with him a massive amount of confidence from what has been an outstanding season for both himself
and his club, and that sort of enthusiasm is infectious.”
Warriors head coach has confirmed that they were closely following Wight’s performance in the Premiership Division One. Lineen agreed that Wight will take some time to adjust at the senior level but admitted that the young Scott has the skills required to
excel at this level.
Lineen Said, “It will obviously be a bit of a change for Scott to be a full-time rugby player, but I've every confidence that he has the attitude and the ability to cope with the step up and make a success of it.”
Wight will have to fight for the position of fly half with the likes of Duncan Weir, Ruaridh Jackson, and Colin Gregor.
