Scottish International Championships 2011: An overview of the tournament
All second stringers in the world of Badminton put in flavour by playing to their maximum potential and won glory in the final day of the Scottish International Championships 2011, which ended on Sunday, November 27, in Glasgow, Scotland.
Many players from around the world proved their mettle by performing well in the tournament and made it to the quarter-finals or even to the last-four stage. However, those shuttlers who reached in the finals in all categories were the really deserving ones
to compete for the title.
In all five categories of the game, shuttlers from five different countries won the titles in their respective categories. Among these five winning countries are England, Sweden, Russian, Denmark and Netherlands.
In the category of Men’s Singles, England’s best shuttler and World Number 33, Rajiv Ouseph emerged as the winner against his lower ranked compatriot Carl Baxter in the final match of the tournament. Ouseph ended up the title match in straight games by putting
up wonderful show of flawless badminton and defeated his opponent without any trouble.
In the first game of this Men’s Singles final, both shuttlers played well but in the concluding phase Ouseph played with aggression and took the set. In the following set, Baxter tried to cope up with the speed of his opponent but failed to control the bird.
Ouseph remained focused throughout the set and finished it with a margin of 21-10. This 33-minute match ended up with a margin of 21-18 and 21-10.
In the category of Women’s Doubles, the World Number 25 pair of Emelie Lennartsson and Emma Wengberg from Sweden thrashed the lower ranked Ng h*i Ern and Ng h*i Lin from Malaysia in the final showdown of the tournament. The Swedish pair showed no mercy tot
Ng sisters and bagged the match in straight sets.
In the first game, Lennartsson and Wengberg played to their full potential against the Malaysian duo and won the first set in a one-sided way by a huge margin of 21-7. In the second set of the match, the Malaysian pair played well in the start but not enough
to stop their opponents from winning the game with a 21-13 score. The 34-minute match ended up in the favour of Swedish pair with a 21-7 and 21-13 margin on the score board.
In the Men’s Doubles category, Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov defeated England’s Marcus Ellis and Peter Mills in straight games. It was a close fight in both games as both pairs put up superb show of top quality badminton. However, the World Number
22 Russian duo won both games with a narrow margin of 21-19 and 21-19 in 35 minutes.
In the category of Mixed Doubles, Denmark’s Kim Astrup Sorensen and Line Kjaersfeldt stunned the top seeds and World Number 44, Wojciech Szkudlarczyk and Agnieszka Wojtkowska of Poland in the final of the event. The Danish couple played superb badminton
and finished up the match in three games with a margin of 15-21, 21-15 and 21-13 by taking 60 minutes in the court.
In the Women’s Singles final, the World Number 57 Judith Meulendijks of Nederland proved her worth against Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt and took just 28 minutes to chuck out her opponent in the straight-set contest with a 21-9 and 21-19 score on the board.
The final results of the tournament indicate that different countries are catching up the top nations in the world of badminton, which is healthy sign for the popularity of this sport on the planet.
