Scottish Open: Ernie Els gets stuck in the bunker
The first day of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open came to an end. The players fought it out and tried to exhibit their best performances. Fans have great expectations from their heroes. Some of them were able to keep their fans happy, while others
were not.
One player under the spot light after giving a bad performance is the South African professional golfer Ernie Els. He had seven birdies for the day, but that is not what everyone is talking about. Els played one of the worst holes of his life.
The highlight of Els’ game was the double bogey that he scored on the sixth hole. The par five hole was of 568 yards. Els finished the hole in 7 shots.
Els got stuck in the bunker for quite a while. It took him four shots just to get out of the bunker of the sixth hole. It has never taken Els this many shots to get out of a bunker in any tournament.
Els had a great start to the tournament. He carded a par on the first hole and then scored three consecutive birdies starting from the second.
Till that point, his score was three-under par. It was followed by an embarrassing double bogey on the sixth hole. After the end of front nine, his score was one-under par.
He had the same score on the back nine as well. He carded four birdies on the eleventh, fourteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth hole.
Unfortunately for the South African player, he also carded a bogey and a double bogey on the twelfth and fifteenth, respectively.
In an interview Els talked about his four shot escape from the bunker, he said it was like, “digging a grave. I was slightly embarrassed there”.
He had no eagles for the day, so this made one-under par on the back nine and two-under par for the day. Els ended the day tied on the sixty-first position with Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Angel Cabrera, David Howell and many others.
Ernie Els is eight strokes behind the leader of the tournament, Francesco Molinari, who ended his day with a magnificent ten-under par. Els will have to play some extra ordinary golf to occupy a good position in the tournament.
