Scottish Premier League: Former Celtic captain says James and Campbell can do well at Celtic
Celtic are looking to bounce back from last season’s disappointment of losing out on the Scottish league title by signing some experienced veterans. The Glasgow based club, who have a huge rivalry with Rangers F.C have their sights set on snatching the title back from their rivals in blue.
Former Celtic captain, Tom Boyd who led the club during Martin O’Neill’s era at Celtic has stated that veteran English stars such as James and Campbell can do well for Celtic. Celtic has been linked to several players in the present summer transfer window.
The former Scottish champions are looking reinforce their squad and both the former English internationals fit the bill perfectly. David James recently returned with the English National Team from South Africa, after they were knocked out of the 2010 World Cup by Germany in the round of sixteen. David James also holds the record for making the highest number of appearances in the English Premier League right now.
David’s former team mate, Campbell spent last season’s end playing for Arsenal and the former Tottenham man greatly impressed during his displays at the Emirates stadium. Boyd has backed Celtic’s current manager Neil Lennon in his pursuit of persuading David James and Sol Campbell to join the Scottish giants.
Boyd during his time at the club was an inspirational figure under O’Neill. He was the main catalyst at the club in their bid to become Scotland’s top team and also establish themselves as a top European outfit. Boyd is seen as a legend by many fans at Celtic and his opinions are respected by everyone at Glasgow Celtic.
Boyd commented on the current transfer situation at the club and said that, James and Campbell have experience at the highest level of football. The former green hoops captain stated that, Neil Lennon is an experienced manager who has been there and done it all and he knows club needs experienced players to compete in the upcoming European cup qualifiers.
Tom Boyd added that, Celtic’s rivals Rangers are losing their players to clubs in England but it will be a remarkable achievement if Celtic can attract players from England to play in the Scottish Premier League. He further said that everyone at the club gets uplifted when experienced stars are signed and added to the squad. Boyd also added that David and Sol both won’t come for cheap to Celtic so it will be difficult to secure their signatures.
Celtic play Braga on Wednesday, in what will be their first competitive match of the season. Tom stated that Neil Lennon will be hoping that any new arrivals at the club will hit the ground running because it usually takes new players around two to three games in order to find their feet. Celtic’s defense came under a lot of criticism last season as they lost the league title to Rangers.
Glasgow Celtic’s former captain also expressed his hope that Lennon will address defensive frailties and turn them into the Scottish powerhouse they once were and in doing so challenge for the league once again.
