Scottish Premier League: Mark McGhee defends himself in face of criticism after Aberdeen lost 9-0 to Celtic
Mark McGhee whose job is under scrutiny after Aberdeen capitulated to a nine goal loss to Glasgow Celtic in the last round of matches in the Scottish League has tried to defend himself against criticism after the club’s administrative
hierarchy gave him a vote of confidence yesterday. It was thought before the Celtic-Aberdeen match took place that the McGhee’s job was on the line already even before his team had ended up as second best to the former Scottish champions.
A lot of pressure was piled on McGhee and some quarters of the Aberdeen supporters also came out and suggested that Mark should quit as the manager but the Scotsman has been strong in face of such opposition. He spoke to the media after
being given a vote of confidence at Aberdeen. Mark stated, "It would have been an easy option for me to decide I'd had enough of this. I've got a contract and that's worth money to me. I could have taken that and been gone and be sitting with my feet up in
Brighton and maybe this weekend fly off to Vegas to my brother-in-law's for a couple of weeks and wonder how Aberdeen were getting on back home.”
Elaborating further on why he didn’t quit, the young manager said, "But that never entered my mind. I was determined to see this through and to try to prove that what I believe can happen here is true. That's going to take time, it's going
to take a huge amount of effort and it's going to continue to be difficult for me because there are people who have made their minds up. I've got to live with that but I'm determined to prove those people wrong."
Speaking on the situation that has prevailed at Aberdeen F.C in the past week, McGhee said, "Of course it's been difficult but let's not get carried away. Its business, everyone's got their issues. We are all under pressure and I don't
imagine the pressure that I've had this week is any different from the pressure that any of us get in our jobs. It's part and parcel of the job. Sometimes it's very good and sometimes it can be very pressurized but I think I've learned to manage that pressure.
I'm not saying I don't feel it and don't think that I didn't lie awake staring at the ceiling this week, but I still manage to see the full picture and I think that's what you've got to do."
McGhee got a vote of confidence after holding extensive talks with Aberdeen’s board of directors. He revealed that it was only positive that the talks were held to diffuse the tension.
Mark added, “The last few days have been good and I mean that. It's been tough in all sorts of ways but in a really positive way because I've got to express all the feelings I've had and all the concerns. It was needed and I think we all
feel an awful lot better for it. A huge amount of positivity can come out of it; there is no choice, that's what's got to happen. I think we were all equally looking at each other. I was looking at them, they were looking at me and we were all saying 'where
are we here?' That's what made it healthy.”
Aberdeen play their next match against Glasgow Rangers, the current Scottish league champions. It is yet another tough task for Mark McGhee’s side which has not been in any sort of form this season. However, Rangers lost their last league
match which was held in mid-week against Hibernian.
