Scottish Professional Snooker Championship 2011: Graeme Dott defeats James McBain in quarter-final
Scotsman, Graeme Dott, surged into the semi-final of the Scottish Professional Snooker Championship 2011 after beating compatriot, James McBain, 5-2, in the quarter-final match on Tuesday,
April 12, at the Lucky Break Snooker Club in Clydebank, Glasgow.
Dott is the third player to have reached to the semi-final stage, with John Higgins and Stephen Hendry to be the first two cueists. He will face the winner of the Stephen Maguire and Anthony
McGill quarter-final match.
Former world champion, Dott, displayed some outstanding potting techniques to unsettle the fellow Scotsman during the game. He had to dig deep and produce extraordinary snooker to push
his opponent down, after the interval.
The match seemed decided already in favour of Dott, as both players are almost the opposite considering the World Snooker Rankings 2010-11. However, McBain proved that wrong when he took
the scrappy first frame with a relatively low score of 55. He took a 1-0 early lead in the game to put pressure on Dott, who was the world championship finalist, last year.
Dott is one of the quality players who cannot be pressed hard because they have the capability to spring back and take the game which he did, as he played impressive shots in the next
frame. The 33-year-old Dott swept the table brilliantly before he stuck a blue at the jaws of the pocket when his opponent, McBain, really needed a snooker to capitalise. Dott took the frame with an amazing shot on the blue to level the score 1-1.
The 32-year-old McBain missed a golden opportunity in the third frame and let Dott on the table, who did not miss any chance and grabbed a one-frame lead in the match with his brilliant
long shots. The Scottish cueman, Dott, extended his lead to 3-1 right after he grabbed the fourth frame, completely outplaying his fellow countryman.
McBain came back hard on the table after the interval and made Dott watch the complete frame sitting on his seat, as he fired a couple of decent breaks of 61 and 28 to clinch his second
frame win with a frame score of 95-0. Graeme Dott, who will turn 34 in May, replied with a 46 break in the sixth frame and retained his two-frame lead at 4-2.
Dott played some extraordinary long shots during the match to nudge McBain down. He continued with his good form and smashed a sensational half-century break of 51 to grab the seventh
and last frame of the match. The World Number Nine stormed into the semi-final after a comprehensive victory in the quarter-final with a 5-2 score line.
Graeme Dott will meet the winner of the quarter-final clash between home professionals, Stephen Maguire and Anthony McGill, on Wednesday, April 13, at the Lucky Break Snooker Club in Clydebank,
Glasgow.
