Scotty Cranmer claims Red Bull Trick or Treat title for the second consecutive year
The Halloween weekend could not have gotten off to a better start for the New Jersey native Scotty Cranmer as he came up with a thrilling performance to reclaim his title at the Red Bull Trick or Treat contest that went down at the Newtown Barge Park in
Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, October 28.
New York’s Pablo Nunez, who had made his debut at the Red Bull Trick and Treat contest, finished in second place, whereas New Jersey’s Sean Ricany continued to grab the attention of the critics with yet another impressive performance that allowed him to
round out the third place.
The latest edition of the BMX street competition was scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 29, but the news of snow and winds to hit New York on Saturday compelled the event organisers to push the event to Friday.
32 riders showed up at Newtown Barge Park, showing off their Halloween spirit by dressing up in costumes, to compete at a street course that offered Halloween themed obstacles which ranged from a grindable coffin boxes to curved grim reaper box and tombstone
vert well.
With the stage all set for what was expected to be a heated battle between both the pros and amateurs in chilling weather, Red Bull Trick and Treat began to treat the crowd to a heavy dose of adrenaline-pumping action.
While all the riders put up a commendable performance, Cranmer managed to really stand out. Donned in a Danny Zuko wig and Grease Lightening jacket, the 24-year-old recently crowned Dew Tour overall Park champion threw down a solid run, executing multiple
fufanu moves on the judges’ tower and pulling off a tail-whip drop from the sub box, among various other tricks. The splendid performance received its due share of appreciation in the form of loud cheering from the crowd, while the judges were convinced that
Cranmer’s performance was indeed the best in the six-man Final.
Talking to a reporter during his post-Final interview, an ecstatic Cranmer said, “It’s an amazing honour to ride well here and I appreciate getting to participate as a semi-local since I’m from New Jersey. It’s not just another contest. Getting dressed up
loosens the mood and helps get people excited about BMX.”
The 17-year-old Nunez put up a pretty exciting show of his own, with a 360 tail-whip drop over the hip set being the highlight of his run. However, he was unable to outperform the defending champion and thus had no choice but to settle for runner-up place
this year.
The 16-year-old Ricany has been under the radar for quite some time now and despite being young and inexperienced in comparison to most of the field, he proved to be wiser beyond his years. His manual to nose wheelie to bar-spin and no-handed foot-jam nose-pick
on the sub box made the mind of the judges melt. He walked away with a third-place finish.
California’s Zac Costa walked away with the Best trick honours after he sent the crowd and judges in awe with a foot-jam nose-pick on the Rip quarter.
The Red Bull Trick or Treat contest turned out to be a thrilling affair despite the change in date preventing some of the riders in the original line-up to make it to Brooklyn in time. However, the local riders stepped in to fill in the void and did extremely
well to make the contest truly epic.
