Scotty Lago wins the first-ever Snowboard Best Method contest at Winter X Games 15
The fans had spoken, and they had spoken hard. They were responsible for deciding the fate of the Snowboard Best Method contest, at Winter X Games 15 (WX 15), by voting for their favourite rider.
It was Ross Powers who took the gold medal home after receiving 57 of the votes. 14 of the percent votes earned Ross Powers the second position, earning him a silver. Chas Guldemond won the bronze with 11 of the percent votes.
Scotty Lago’s appearance in the WX was quite surprising, considering he had broken his his jaw while filming a snowboarding video in the backcountry earlier this year on the 11th of Jan. The snowboarder from Seabrook, New Hampshire, still managed to make
it to the mega event after two weeks. His endurance paid off as he clinched the gold medal in the SnowBoard Best Method contest.
“I am stoked,” Lago said. “Thanks to everyone for voting for me. I couldn't be any happier. I went from a super low not making Slopestyle finals today, to winning my first X Games gold medal.”
Lago’s style for miles was indeed a spectacular site for the audience. A simple straight air jump, followed by grabs and tweaks, was made to look so much more by the way he pulled it off. He held on to his grabs longer and kicked his tweaks stronger than
the rest. 57 percent of the votes not only earned him the first place, it paid a tribute to his grab-style and tweaks.
Ross Powers, the snowboarder from Stratton, Vermont, already had a star status with four medals to his name. He lived up to his repute by adding another one this year. Intending to impress the fans, he added his own creativity to the grabs and tweaks, and
took nose-methods to a completely new level. He ended up with the silver medal after 14 percent of the votes went in his favour.
Chas Guldemond, resident of Reno, Nevada, came third after 11 percent of the votes went to him. The highlight of his jam came when he decided to go shirtless for one of his jumps, something beyond everyone’s wildest dreams.
Mason Aguirre, fourth, and Jack Mitrani, fifth, earned 7 percent and 6 percent of the votes respectively. There was a tie between Greg Bretz and Peter Line for the sixth position with each getting two percent of the votes. Mikkel Bang came last, with only
1 percent of the votes going to him.
The Snowboard Best Method event made a debut in Winter X Games this year. This discipline featured 8 riders executing the method, the most cherished trick in snowboarding, in their own specific style. It was a 100 percent fan-judged contest, the snowboarder
with the best method getting decided through text-voting.
