Scouts welcomed at Houston College Classic tournament – MLB News
The Houston College Classic had over 100 former experts, a potential Number one Draft selection and three college teams. The scouts were out in full effect as they gauged the potential players for the Major League.
There was a tremendous amount of focus on Rice junior third baseman Anthony Rendon, who many experts feel will most likely be among the first choice in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
Speaking at the conference, one Major League expert stated that, "It's a very solid event. The talent is not deep here, but there are definitely a few solid guys. Rendon, in my opinion, can play and help a Major League team right now."
This is the 11th year of the Houston College Classic as Rice, Houston, Baylor, Texas A&M, Utah and Kentucky all took part. Currently Baylor is ranked at Number 16 in the state for baseball as Texas A&M and Rice are ranked at Number 20 and 21.
The Houston College Classic always brings out the scouts, as the majority of Major League teams send their representatives to survey the potential candidates.
Logan Verret of Baylor, Alex Meyer from Kentucky and Texas A&M’s John Stilson are also first round contenders that are attracting a lot of attention.
Verret had a tremendous pitching performance for Baylor as he led them to a 5-2 win over Houston. His performance attracted many scouts as a potential Major Leaguer.
Rendon also had a decent performance as he put in a tremendous effort to go 5-for-11 with a home-run. Meyer showed why he has so much potential as gave up four runs on five strikes in just over six innings.
Houston coach Todd Whitting expressed his feelings about the tournament as, "The Classic, to me, is the premier college baseball tournament in the country. The level of competition is outstanding. The atmosphere and environment around the game is second
to none."
The Houston College Classic is the ideal opportunity for young upcoming players to be seen by the MLB’s top scouts for a potential deal to play in the big leagues.
