Question:

Scrabble question...?

My mom & I play Scrabble a lot and this has never come up before...in your turn can you add on to both ends of a word in one turn? For example: the word on the board is LACE. Can you add a "p" and a "d" to make PLACED ? We do not have rules that came with the game (our version is at least 20 years old!)

I know there's some experts out there who will know this! Thanks.

  1. Yes, you most certainly CAN do exactly what you described.

  2. yes you can! as long as its a real word.

  3. Yes, you can. As long as it's in a row, it's allowed.

  4. I am not an expert,but I am a Scrabble tournament player.

As long as all the letters added to the board a part of a main word ( you may make secondary words as well,  like if one of you newly played letters is an S and pluralizes a word already on the board) Yes it is certainly allowed.

Here is something that  many players misstate: It must be a real

    word.

If you play a phony, and your opponent does not challenge it off the board, it is a legitimate play.  It is sometimes a god strategic move to play a phony word!

After all, it is possible to play a word that you believe to be real, but may not appear in the dictionary you are using, and so would be disallowed if challenged.

  5. Yes, you can certainly do that.  You can add letters in only one direction in a turn, but you can add on to each end of the same word.  I am not aware of any rule that says you cannot add on to each end of a word as long as you do not change direction.

  6. Yes, you can do that! I play with my friends that way!

  7. No.

All letters during a play must be played on vertical or horizontal connecting squares and any combination of letters that result must form a word.
