Question:

Scratched Cornea and Vision Loss

My 24 year old son scratched his cornea. It was caused by his contact lens. He was seen in the ER right away, and then by an eye doctor. The eye doctor gave him drops, and it healed slowly. Now the scratch is fully healed, but my son's vision out of that eye can only be corrected to 20/100 with glasses. Wearing contacts is a bit better than that for my son.

The scratch caused this change in vision. The eye doctor is not sure why that happened, and will refer to a cornea specialist. We will wait a month for that appointment.

Why has the scratch caused the vision to get worse, and what options will the cornea specialist have to try to improve the vision?

Thanks

  1. The scratch and subsequent scar may have caused irregular astigmatism in the cornea. The scar may be interfering with the visual pathway. There are lots of reasons for the vision decrease. The cornea specialist may recommend a corneal transplant to get the best vision.
