Screen seems dead, but comes alive once in a while. The laptop screen seems dead. It comes alive

The laptop screen seems dead. It comes alive for a few seconds (maybe 2), when you first power it up, or when you play with the lid button, but immediately goes to being too dark. You can get a flashlight near it, and sort of read whats on the screen, login, navigate with mouse, and work, but its just way to dark.Is the screen really dead ? What can i do to fix this ?
