  1. If it's on the transom (transducer bracket for example), coat the threads in 3m 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant.  Ordinary silicone tends to draw up as it cures.

The tape before drilling is a good tip it works.

  2. yes but take a blanket so no one sees you s******g

  3. tape over where you want to drill

    pre-drill a smaller pilot hole

drill holes to the size needed

if area is subject to getting water coat the screws with sealant/silicone and s***w in

  4. And????????????

Drill a pilot hole 1/2 the diameter of the s***w. Use course threads. Wood s***w type threads work well, "spax" self tapping screws eliminate the need for pre-drill. If you want good security, coat the threads with epoxy when installing. Do not overtighten.

  5. I agree that pre-drilling, even if you are using self-tapping and sh eat metal screws, particuliarly larger sizes like #10 and up.  The tape over isn't a bad idea.  I don't use a hard epoxy to seal the s***w.  If i'm installing cleat's, or anything that something pulls, on use through bolts, not screws.  And use a backing plate if the fiberglass isn't reinforced in the area you are mounting the part on. , Most boats have wood incapsulated in the fiberglass in areas where items like cleats, lifelines, railings, or rigging is normally installed.  So when you drill the pilot hole, look for wood chips. You can feel the differance.    Don't drill or s***w in areas that might have electrical or other equipment on the other side.  I know it's hard to see sometimes, but look before you drill.   Once I drilled into brace on the back side.  Once you start any hole, it's very hard to repair, if it's not where you want it.   Good luck!
