  1. inpacket skrew driver

  2. I would guess you are trying to get out are the screws out of the lower unit on an outboard engine or out drive?

The proper way is to use an impact screwdriver. Make sure the driver point is at least 3/4 the length of the s***w slot and fits snugly into the groove. I usually tap the s***w driver into the slot with a hammer and then attach the driver. Make sure you have a firm grip on the driver before hitting the top of the driver. This drives the s***w driver head into the groove and also twists the s***w. The driver will spin clockwise or counter clockwise so make sure you have it set to spin counter clockwise.

A couple of firm blows to the top of the driver should loosen the s***w.(s)

There is a couple of other ways to get the s***w out but you take the chance of destroying the slot and having to drill the s***w out. not a fun job. If you have damaged the s***w do not reuse it replace it.

Spend a few bucks and get the proper tool which you can use again and again on this and other items. The driver also works with sockets.

Here is a link to a site that shows an impact driver:

If it has been a while since you have change oil in the lower unit and you find any water or milky colored oil you probably need seals. While changing seals always change the water pump impeller.

When you replace the s***w clean it well with a solvent such as alcohol. spread a little silicone sealant on the threads and around the edge of the s***w head. This will dry and make it less likely for corrosion to form especially in salt water.

Flush your engine with fresh water after each use with a hose attachment if possible . This is especially important in salt and muddy water.

      Good luck

  3. If it is the engine sump plug that is seized, then I would suggest, leave it alone. Most sumps are pressed steel with a threaded insert for the plug. Too much pressure on the seized plug and you will tear the insert out of the sump, then that means having to remove the engine from the boat for sump repairs.Even if the sump is alloy, there is still a good chance you will tear the thread out. Most marine shops will sell either a drill operated pump or a hand operated vacuum pump, for evacuating oil. They have a plastic hose that is small enough in diameter to go down the dipstick tube to the bottom of the sump. Run the engine first to warm up and thin out the oil. This method is also a cleaner way of changing your oil.

  4. Before using the impact driver warm the boat up so the metal will expand and do it warm. This will keep you from messing up the threads.

  5. Use an impact s***w-driver. Make SURE it's all the way in before you hit it.

    Edit-Use new gaskets, NOT silicone
