  1. Watch the good ones as much as you can on TV

Know every law there is and how far you can push them with the ref you have each day.

Annoy the oposition forwards as much as possible.

They are dumb fat kids and will soon swing a punch at you giving you a penalty.

Take the penalty quick and get your team 10m forward - don't let your fly half kick everything.

  2. 2 MAJOR things to learn as a halfback!

    PASSING and SPEAKING!

Being a halfback you are the 1 of the most pivotal players on the field. You need to learn to get a feel for your opposition because if you can't do that you will never be a great halfback.

This is speaking from experience as I am a former New Zealand school boys rugby halfback and New Zealand colts halfback.

You need to be able to communicate with both your backs and forwards in such a manner that everyone is on the same level as each other.

Looking for the right time to kick, pass or run is a huge part of the game because if you make the wrong decision then it can affect your team in horrible ways.

Now as for players to watch.

Personally when it comes to quick thinking and having an eye for the game George Greegan is the man, (as much as I hate to admit that) for passing, try and look for New Zealand rugby in the way of Jimmy Cowan or Byron Kellaher. They are 2 of the swiftest and strongest passers of a ball I have ever seen.

Well hope this helps a little.

  3. ball in quickly  for the hooker . controll the pack by telling forwards  to drive  or set up   then spin the ball out  with control

  4. Scrums:

    Your feed:

    - If you have to collect the ball from somewhere on the field, and need to walk past the scrum to get to the side you are feeding from, ALWAYS, always, walk behind the opponents scrum.  This way your hooker can see where the ball is at all times.

    - Wait for your hooker to signal he is ready for you to feed the ball before you feed the ball.  The ball must roll flat across the middle of the scrum.  No trying to bounce it to your side of the scrum.

    - You will have to be aware of where you 5/8th (fly-half) or other person you are going to pass it to after you win the scrum is located.  Note they may move after you feed the scrum.

    - You have to watch the ball in the scrum so you know where the ball will be coming out of the scrum.

    - You must also be aware of the opposition half back, as the ball may pop out, unexpectedly, of the scrum.

    - When the ball comes out of the scrum anyone can touch it.

    Opponents feed:

    - Pressure your opponent to make a mistake.

    - You have to stay behind the ball while it is in the scrum.

    - Try to anticipate the ball coming out of the scrum, so you can either play the ball, or tackle the half-back.

    Rucks and mauls:

Your ball and/or the opponents ball:

    - You will need to direct your forwards, and possibly backs as to where to pack into the ruck or maul to gain the most advantage.  The position of sending the player depends on where the ball is, how how it is protected (at the end of the ruck, in the middle, in the hands of a player, etc).

    Your ball:

    - You will still need to know where the ball is and where the person you are passing the ball to is.  They may move before the ball comes out.

    The opponents ball:

    - If you can see the opposition has wrapped the ball up, and you cannot win it.  Do not send the forwards into the ruck.  The forwards should line up in defense.  If it is a maul, you will still need to send the forwards in, but in the direction that will stop the momentum of the maul.

    Line outs:

    - You will have to be ready to catch the ball from the lineout whether it is your throw in or not.

    - If the ball goes past 15 metres, the line at the back of the lineout, any player of your team can play at the ball.

    - Your forwards will probably not give you the cleanest ball from the lineout.  For instance, the ball could be bouncing along the ground, tapped above you head, tapped to your feet, etc.  You need to practice controlling the ball when it is in all positions.

    General:

    - Remember you can kick or run the ball from a ruck and maul, but you would only be advised to do this after a couple of games, (unless you have a good grasp of controlling a game).  This way, you can learn when doing this may be advantageous (good) for your team.

    - If you need to go into a ruck and maul, do not try to come out quickly.  Just allow the natural process of the ruck or maul letting you go.  Other people hopefully will fill your position.  If it all possible, yell out, "No halfback", so your other players will know to fill in as a half back.  If you try to come out quickly, you will probably get injured.

  5. work hard and thats all you'll need.

  6. have played scrum for 4 years, i think the most important thing is to take charge of your team, respectfully, you have to build a relationship with your line especially you fly half. if you 2 aren't in-sync your whole team is screwed. keep on the ball and remember you have cleats for a reason, so scrap when necessary! and one last thing if you were an inside you have power use that to get the ball and get it out the quicker the better!
