Question:

Scrumhalf rugby?

I play scrum half for my school in the u-17 competition. I'm quite tall for my age group, and not too big though. I'm 1m 70 or 5 foot 8 and 120 pounds or 54 kilos. Many of the schools we play like to use their forwards a lot. My tackles aren't bad against forwards or backs running where i can just get their legs. But when they get low, and crash, and since i'm tall, i always end up on top either pushing upwards, pushing them back or trying to pull them down. Sometimes they can push me quite far before i get support, is there a way i can position myself so that i can get the forwards low real quick before they have time to gain momentum? and what are ways to hit them harder

  1. When tackling make sure that you drive with leg power. This will give you more momentum and strength when hitting the opposition whether its a leg tackle or body tackle. Watch Wilkinson !!

  2. Two options mate,

    1. To get lower than them, at 5ft 8" this shouldn't be an issue, get down on almost one knee and drive upwards. The problem here is being handed off easily.

    2. Which is used by alot of Scrum-halves is to 'go with the runner' putting your weight on the front of his body and bringing him down in the direction he is running. Decent forwards will generally hold possesion this way, but once you get confident you can work on turning them in the tackle by almost swinging yourself around them, you will end up on the wrong side and get a shoeing every now and then but hey.. that's what it's about.

I'm a openside flanker, 6ft 2" and 15st and fairly quick. I love when 9's try to drive me back... generally you a can break the line and set up serious attacks this way! The second method works best if you can't perfect getting the ankles!

    Best of luck.

  3. Are you in China?

5,8 isn't tall. It's small, but fine for a scrum half.

    Don't try to hit harder.

As a scrum half the forwards you're tackling have very little momentum. Put your shoulder in their lower stomach and lift behind one of their knees. The difection thay fall depends on what knee you lift.
