When you go scuba diving do you actually have to dive?

  1. Technically speaking you can dive on every "dive".  Some people just sink below the surface and when they get to their depth (or reach the bottom) they level out while others put themselves upside down and head to their depth (or bottom) head first.  That's diving.

  2. No, you get in right off the boat (without actually diving)

  3. Getting into the water with SCUBA gear on pretty much stops you going head first.

There are four standard entry methods which are taught for SCUBA:

    1) The stride entry - for when you know what you are getting into, the water is deep enough and where there is a bit a drop to the water; used for big boats, jetties and harbour walls

    2) Seated entry - for when the water is not too deep, you might not know exactly what you are getting into and there is no drop to the water; used for beach/rock entries

    3) Backward roll entry - for getting in from small boats

    4) Forward roll entry - although I have taught these, I have never used one on an actual dive.
