Scuba divers, how long have you been diving? Are you still excited about it?

Those of you read scuba questions probably know I've only been OWD certified for just over a month, but I love diving! I still haven't done ocean diving, haven't had the opportunity, it's all been fresh water lakes and quarries.

A few vet divers I know tease me because I'm so excited about it. One, who has been diving for 20 years, tells me that in a year I won't be excited anymore. Another, who has dived for 5 years, says that I will still be excited in a year, I just won't feel like I'm going to die if I don't dive every weekend.

What say you all? If you're not excited by it anymore, why not?

  1. only been diving since May but I love all of it, except when I get cold. I haven't been to the ocean either but I love the lakes in northern Arkansas, (Bull Shoals, Beaver). I am hoping to do an ocean dive in December. I always want to dive, but it is hard to find someone else to go.  Also looking into a dry suit for the cold.

  2. 23 years and counting for me. If there's a dive going on with some pals, I'd probably miss my Mom's funeral, to dive it. It's not the excitement for me ( my office is underwater), but the sense of history, as I almost exclusively wreck dive and usually get a heads up on a new wreck being found and manage to dive it, before uncaring divers tear it up. Helps to have pals with side scan, even if they are marine cops. :)

Keep it up, it only gets better as you accumulate experience and you'll find your "niche" of what sort of dives turn your crank.

The divers that are teasing you? That's all they're doing. Deep down, most feel the same but won't dare show it. It's just not cool, ya know. :)

  3. I have been diving since 2004, i have dived in the most spectacular places (and some of the crappiest places!!) in the world.

When i started my OWD i had to complete the certification in a dry suit as there was snow on the ground and the water temp was d**n cold...it was so cold i got hypothermia..but i carried on diving! I then went on to pass my AOWD certification in the Great Barrier reef (Just by Mackay in Queensland) have you ever tried passing your buoyancy test with sea urchins one side and black tip reef sharks the other?

I have dived in the UK, Australia, Greece, Mexico, California, and even Las Vegas; and i still get a buzz of excitement every time i get into my BCD and strap on my mask!

The old guys who tease you cos your excited are just jealous as they are probably a bit blase about the experience, and they forget what it's like to first get into the water in your own personal aquarium!

Enjoy many years of diving, and happy bubbles!

  4. hey, think you're thinking the wrong way here! Scuba diving is a hobbie, and I mean, if you love it you'll love it! it doesn't matter if you're still gonna be excited next year or 20 years down the road....if you love it now and are enjoying it, that's the most important point, we'll leave tomorrow for tomorrow.....

less worries and enjoy yourself while you're young! :D

    Cheers

  5. I've been diving for 8 eight years, not regularly though. The last dive I did was in July this year. I'm still enthusiastic about scuba diving and I intend to go to Sipadan next year.
