  1. its a plus to know how to swim, but if you are really really interested to learn diving you will know swimming at the same time , just ask your instructor to teach you frist to swim effectively.

me, myself doesnt know swimming a lot, but i manage diving, its so much fun underwater, you dont need to be a swimmer to dive but you just need to listen what is your scuba instructor is telling you. I made my open water licence in the philippines, it was great with my german instructor, he speak fluent english.

  2. First it is very important that you are comfortable in the water - this means being a confident swimmer.  If you can't swim you panic and that is not good.

To learn to dive, find a dive school and try a "Discover Scuba" course.  From there, if you like it,  you can do the "Open Water Diver" course.

    Good luck!

  3. you must be able to swim but dun hv to be very good at it. If ur able to swim, u will be comfortable in the water. and so able to handle emergencies better. if ur not too sure on what diving is about, go for the discover scuba program first. get a little taste of it and get certified if ur up for it. before diving into the sea, u will experience diving in a pool first. so dun worry. good luck on yr new interest! =)

  4. You don't need to know how to swim going in, but you'll have to learn sometime though...for my class, I had to swim 8-900 yards, 50 yards underwater, and tread water for 10 minutes.

What you need to know, is find a good instructor, and  if you can, take the 8 week course instead of the weekend one.  Diving is safer than swimming if done properly, but you'll have a harder time doing it properly if you don't get a good instructor or if you take the crash course.

While it's safer than swimming, when something goes wrong, it goes wrong big time.  On the lesser side of consequences, there's a busted ear drum, on the more major side, a very painful death caused by your lungs bursting.
