Hi scubabob, I'm getting my commercial diving ticket soon and asked around the dive company on any offshore diving related job... but all the companies refuse to accept newbies they prefer more experience people.

I just frustrated as i cant go offshore without experience and yet i cant get experience without going offshore. Need some guidances from you.. I dont even mind work with lower pay compare to the standard rates... i just wan a start..

  1. If you're going through an accredited dive program, the head hunters will be knocking about 3/4 the way through the course. If it's a smaller school, you'll usually have placement assistance at the very least.

Who says you need to go offshore? Oil rigs aren't the only place to work. Inland divers are needed too. Start knocking on power companies doors. They use cooling towers

Marine construction companies are always building bridge and wharf foundations. Salvage companies are always raising things that shouldn't be where they are. As for not minding working for lower pay...well..good, you won't be getting high pay or even moderately high pay. You probably won't even be doing much diving the first year with whoever hires you. You'll be a tender. That's the way it is. Nobody I've ever hired has gotten in the water their first year with me, save one guy who was exceptional and I took a chance on him after 6 months tender.

I don't know what school you're going through, but if they promised you the world, they lied or at least stretched the truth a bit. Most dive schools give you enough of an education to work the barge without getting anyone hurt and give you enough skills to get a start. You are nowhere near ready to dive real world right out of class. They did include at least welding, right?

I don't want to sound negative but reality check time. Companies ARE hiring. You just need to look to get your foot in the door.
