Scuderia Ferrari looking to consider Sergio Perez in place of Felipe Massa for 2013 – Formula 1 news
Scuderia Ferrari are reported to have said that they will be considering Sergio Perez for its 2013 drivers line-up in place of Felipe Massa.
The Italian squad has tentatively announced that it wants Sauber’s Sergio Perez to drive alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2013 season of Formula 1. The final decision however will be made public later.
Massa’s disappointing performance during the ongoing 2011 season has prompted the team to look for other drivers. The 30-year-old could not live up to the team’s expectations and has had a terrible season so far. His performances at the Turkish, Spanish
and Monaco Grand Prix this year have been extremely frustrating for the team.
At the Singapore Grand Prix held recently, the Brazilian ended up at the 9th position fetching only 2 points for his squad. So far, he has only been able to score 84 points while his Spaniard teammate Fernando Alonso has 184 points
on the drivers’ championship.
The Maranello-based team is currently at the 3rd position on the constructors’ standings, behind the McLarens and Red Bull Racing team.
Ferrari are thus looking to recruit a younger talent for 2013 in place of Massa and right now Sergio Perez is considered to be the best candidate for Massa’s replacement.
Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali while speaking to Spain’s Marca said, “Ferrari cannot have two young drivers, there is incredible pressure at this team. But a mix between an extremely strong driver and one younger with the potential to be great would
be complementary.”
The 21-year-old Mexican, who is the youngest Formula 1 driver, has had a very impressive career from the very start. His recent demonstration test at the Fiorano circuit, which was a great success, is an example of excellent driving skills.
There are still some doubts whether Ferrari would actually hire Perez in place of Massa or not.
In response, the team’s boss however is reported to have said, “He has a contract with Sauber, which will let him continue to grow and have a good 2012.”
Let’s see what the team decides and what the future holds for Massa and Perez.
