I have only skated on my new ice skates 4 times. This last time i noticed that one skate had a grey mark on it. Is that a scuff? Is that normal is there anything i can do get rid or prevent it?

  1. Scuffs, scrapes, cuts, gouges and marks are all very normal results of using your skates, especially when jumping and spinning.  Some scuffs rub off or can be polished over, some can't.  I think "war wounds" give skates personality!  :)  To prevent boo-boos on your skates, you can wear boot covers or use skate tape.  While I know some skaters who use skate tape, some complain about the goo that is left behind from taking the tape off.  Boot covers come in a wide array of colors to satisfy your fashion taste, are washable, long-lasting and probably a little easier to put on than the tape.  There will probably be more scuffs where that one came from! :)

  2. boot covers will help

  3. Scuffs, and scrapes are very common to get on your skates. You can buy polish to polish out the scuffs or you can use sk8tape and just tape your skates. Sometimes you can use your finger and a damp rag to get the scuffs off. While you are skating there isn't much you can do to prevent scuffs while you are on the ice, but when you are carrying your skates around you can get boot bags to put on your skates so they don't rub on each other and ding each other up.

  4. You can usually polish the gray marks out with some decent shoe polish and a soft rag. Get yourself a shoe-shine kit and learn how to use it.

For scuffs that go all the way to the leather (I used to get them in roller, maybe you don't on ice), I used to paint them with acrylic paint. It worked okay except for the brush marks. I think if I was going to do that now, I'd use a spray acrylic or enamel (in the model toy aisle at Walmart) for a smoother finish.

As far as preventing scuffs, you can't, not really. Skates do get scuffed. It's the nature of the beast. You could try wearing boot covers in practice then the covers will get dirty and your skates will stay clean. I always hated boot covers and just kept my skates polished.

  5. yes that is very normal. When you start landing difficult jumps the toe of your landing foot will get very scuffed. don't worry about it... everybody has marks. if you really don't like it wear boot covers.

  6. My skates used to look atrocious after only a few times out on the ice especially when i was working on double jumps. Then I found bootcovers at my skate shop and my skates(which are almost a year old) look like brand new. Everytime I go to a competition, my skates are shinny and pretty while other girls have nearly all gray skates. Bootcovers are an excelent investment of only a couple of dollars.
