Here in the Chesapeake Bay water shed, two of the most common types of jellyfish are the Lion's Main and the Sea Nettle. What are some ways to tell these two apart and which, in general, has the worse sting?

  1. It's pretty easy to tell the two apart.  Lion's Mane doesn't have the frilly stuff coming out of the bottom.  It's also bigger.  A LOT bigger.  A Lion's Mane is the biggest jellyfish in the world.

I don't really know which one has the worst sting, though.  I would have to guess the lion's mane, thanks to the sheer number of netamocysts that would activate if you got tangled in its tentacles.
