Sea levels have been 25 feet higher than today, and 320 feet lower than today....?

Doesnt this make the whole "coastal cities will flood" arguement useless, as it is OUR FAULT for building there anyways? Does this not indicate that we have no control over the sea level?

  1. Global warming deniers mistakenly believe that unprecedented warming and unprecedented sea level rises are THE evidence for anthropogenic (man-made) global warming. This simply isn’t the case. Both the sea level and global temperatures have been higher at some point(s) in the past.

What is unprecedented is that carbon emissions/deforestation is the cause of changes in today’s climate. This fact IS undisputed by nearly every climate scientist currently engaged in research. Other climate changes in the past have has different causes.

  2. the natural changes in sea level were very slow processes, taking 10000 years and more, we are now facing a possible change (rise) in sea levels in 20 - 50 years.

the oldest human settlement is 10000 years old, and the change is sea levels is as slow as the movement of the tectonic plates, humans can move in much less than 10000 years, or even 1000 years, without suffering from the change, but look at Venice, that in 700 years from it's days of glory is now sinking, and the change there is too fast for people to move their city, they will have to abandon it.

  3. First, the information is incorrect (where did you get it?), sea levels have been much higher.

Second, no, it's well known that temperatures and sea levels have been different in the past.  Studying those past fluctuations leads many scientists to believe that they understand the causes involved, that humans are contributing to the current warming, and that we can slow the rate that we're causing it or perhaps stop it or reverse it somewhat.

What's the alternative, simply abandon all coastal cities and land?  Keep retreating while the water keeps rising?  What happens to global economies, possibly global currencies and the entire monetary system (and therefore food delivery and other necessities that rely on having a currency system)?

Some scientists do think we can't affect the climate enough to slow or stop the warming, some think we may be too late anyway, and maybe we'll fail for social and political reasons such as failing to agree upon greenhosue gas reductions.

The science is continuing to be developed, the social and political solutions are being negotiated, and we'll know more as time goes by.  Meanwhile it probably doesn't make sense to throw our arms in the air and walk away from trillions of dollars in coastal real estate and perform an unprecedented test on modern civilization, even if the threat is a few decades out and not quite 100% confirmed.

  4. Yes, you are most correct.

  5. Where I live there have been large sea creature fossils found at what is now 100-200 feet above current sea level. This would indicate that sea levels were once much higher. Since this takes tens of thousands of years, and there were not any SUVs or coal-fired power plants around then, it removes the "our fault" argument. Ultimately, we have no control. But no worries - as the coastal areas begin to be gradually overtaken, most people are smart enough to move inland.

  6. You got it.  Watch the idiots that believe in the warming farce put you down.

  7. Does everyone agree that the earth has an atmosphere??  If it didn't space travel would have happened much sooner.  Every engine and/or factory gives off heat as a by product.  Ever stood by an exhaust pipe of any kind??  The earth will not allow all that "exhaust" or "heat" to just escape!  Sooner or later (it already has) the heat will very slowly build up and cause major problems.

  8. So you are saying its ok to let these coastal cities ( nay countries : Netherlands) just flood?

It in no way indicates we have no control. Assuming AGW is correct, which it probably is , we may still have time to curb the warming.
