Sea monkeys are an interesting and simple pet to keep in the home or office. They are easy to care for, tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and don't require a huge budget when it comes to feeding time. Surprise to many is the discovery that Sea monkeys will in fact look after them selves once a healthy ecosystem has been established. And those who have successfully kept them before will be aware that like the 'bio-filter' used in fish keeping circles to maintain a healthy tank, a generous crop of emerald green algae growing in their tank is the noble endeavour to aim for when it comes to keeping sea monkeys.

Why? For the uncirculated seamonkey tank, algae acts as a kind of vegetable based cleaning system, requiring no moving parts like air pumps or filters and whose role is to provide a passive recycling system, reducing your sea monkeys waste and also providing the preferred food source for your pets not to mention oxygen, further once you strike a balance, no more feeding or manual aeration is necessary, this is the key to a thriving Sea monkeys set up and is very simple to do once you know how.

However the problem with the marketed 'Sea monkeys' kits as I see it, is that these plastic tanks (all thou convenient for a quick set up) are just plain dull and do no favours to the animals or you when it comes the wonderful range of possibilities that can be achieved using your imagination. For example interesting vases, fish tanks or bowls can be used as an alterative to plastic and once you are equipped with some ideas and a little bit of creativity the possibility of ornamentation and habitat designs are endless.

So come join me on my journey as I muck around with multitude of different tank designs and decoration ideas and even explore a range of cute little tank mates that for a change wont see your sea monkeys as fish food.

  3. they aren't bacteria they are brine shrimp, and i bought mine at wal-mart in the toy section, and no they are easy to keep and mildly interesting to have. don't expect any real pet/owner interactions though, they mostly just swim in circles, they don't get very large either

  4. its just bacteria, they aren't really pets!
