Seabury Hall boys volleyball team loses to Hawaii Baptist Academy on Saturday
Volleyball has become a sport that is played with professional zeal both at the university and the high school level. The thrill of the game has captivated young players to devote their energies and time to this sport. Volleyball has not limited itself to
males; females also take part in the game enthusiastically.
The popularity of the sport has generated various local, national and international volleyball tournaments. Teams train vigorously all year to hone their skills and be competitive. Such tournaments do not only take place at the university level but high
school teams also compete in various championships. More often than not, most such tournaments serve the purpose of a platform from which the young athletes are spotted to be a part of the university teams.
One such championship saw its final take place on Saturday between the Seabury Hall boys volleyball team as well as the Hawaii Baptist Academy. The two teams competed against each other in the final of the state Division-II championship.
Despite the fact that the Spartans lost to HBA in a sweep, they did not go down without putting up a commendable challenge. Each of the three back-to-back set wins that HBA was able to achieve was obtained after a hard wrench from the Spartans. By the time
that HBA was celebrating their well deserved victory and savouring the champions’ title while the Spartans were eyeing their rivals enviously, the scoreboard read, 25-22, 25-23 and 26-24.
The attack and defence of HBA was well coordinated and gave a tough time to the Spartans to assert their dominance in the match. HBA kept raining down relentless kills on the Spartans that kept them under pressure. Other than that, the defence of HBA was
tough to break through as well.
Despite the fact that the HBA team put in a team effort, some players stood prominent in the entire match. These were Chad Barretta and Mike Fisher. Barretta is a junior on the HBA team and was able to keep the scoreboard ticking by posting a total of 20
kills. Barretta was helped by his teammate, Fisher – a sophomore- who made his presence felt by contributing 14 kills of his own.
The Spartan players who provided HBA with tough competition were Rocky Delyon, Conner Snow and Alex Wright. Delyon was able to keep the spirits of the Spartans up by registering a total number of 14 kills. Delyon was supported by his teammate Snow, who was
able to keep the Spartan side of the scoreboard ticking by posting seven kills. Wright also kept the scoreboard running by adding six kills of his own.
With accomplishing such a close sweep of the Spartans, HBA are now the new champions of the state Division II volleyball.
