  1. ive just got back from westward ho! and saw this amazing house.the 1st day i was there i was sat in my car at the entrance to the adjacent caravan sight admiring the house and saw a little old lady leave the house via the gate with the wreck of a car and the old boat, she headed onto the cliff path.
i went back down to the house a couple of days later.i met with a local woman walking her dog,i asked her about the house shes live on the same road for 55 years, from what she knows of the owners is..
the house is owned  now by an elderly lady who is recently widowed.her husband died a recently in his mid to late eighties.apparently the couple fell out years ago,but neither wanted to leave the house late in life,so the lived in separate halves of the house.the lady living in the end nearer to the beach huts, and the man the end of the house that has been partly repaired.the lady still doesnt use the end of the house the gentleman used to live in.
the man was also a recluse and had friends deliver shopping and materials for repairing the house, which he attempted to do himself, but at 80+ couldnt have been easy.he also tended to the garden, the lady i spoke to didnt know who looks after it now.the lady told me an interesting fact too.the friends who made the deliveries to the house never went inside the grounds or house they passed the items at the gates or over the wall to the gentleman.
the local woman also told me of what she has learnt about the place,
the cliff path used to be a rail line from appledore and the house was built at the end of the line.for a long time the house was used as childrens home or a boarding house for children, but not sure when in the houses history this was.
i would love to find out more about this place, and hope what i was told is correct.
one more note,on my last night there i wanted to take a few pictures of the place at night,i went back at 9.30ish,there were lights on on the ground floor and first floor at the end of the house where the lady lives.i attempted to take the pictures at the end of the house where the man lived so not to scare the lady with the camera flash.(my camera is a mid range kodak 8megapix,with a decent flash.)all of the pictures i took where black, with the exception of 1 which has a tiny dot of light.slightly strange i think.but who knows?(i only took 3 pics because it started to poor down with rain and was bloody freezing too.i plan to go back again soon maybe with a better camera at night, and also research the place more.ive fallen in love with this old wreck.

  2. i live in east the water in bideford n even i know about that house so it is well known

  3. Currently Staying In Westward Ho! and a  local lady came up to us and started talking to us when we were stood looking at the house. she told us that a brother and sister have lived in the house since the 1950s and still live there now.she also said that they dont talk to each other and live in seperate parts of the house.
Seems weird how the house looks abandond but theres webcams there....

  4. people do live there they go to the same pub as my dad, theres no point in them spending lots of money doing it up as itl be in the sea in the not to distant future due to eroision, so they just leave it as it is.

  5. I am a member of the Westward Ho Community History Project and have researched this house, a leaflet we produced can be purchased from the Newsagents or Post Office at Westward Ho!.As can other info on the village of WQestward Ho!. We also have web pages site on the Beehive network. An exhibition is held at least once a year.
