Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll: Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson will have to compete for starting role
In presence of Aaron Rodgers as Green Bay Packers’ starting quarterback, his backup, Matt Flynn, did not get enough opportunities to showcase his talent. However, Flynn did what he could within the limited chances provided to him and his performance stunned
nearly everyone.
Flynn has now joined the Seattle Seahawks, who started with Tarvaris Jackson last season. In presence of both quarterbacks, the team management has not decided who will get the starting role in the next season.
However, Seahawks’ head coach, Pete Carroll, has said that both quarterbacks will have to compete for the starting role and that he will monitor both of them during the offseason and training camp before making the final call.
Last year, Flynn started the regular season finale in which Rodgers was given rest. The game was played against Detroit Lions and the quarterback finished with completing 31 of his 44 attempted passes for 480 yards while throwing six touchdowns and only
one interception. He received a quarterback rating of 136.4.
On the other hand, Jackson started 14 games while playing 15 in which he completed 271 passes of 450 attempts for 3,091 yards. He sent 14 touchdown-passes and threw 13 interceptions, receiving a quarterback rating of 79.2.
During a radio interview, Carroll said about of the quarterback position:
“What we are looking for is to make this position very competitive. Tarvaris Jackson was our starter last year and he’s coming in to compete head-to-head for the starting job. It’s my job now to make sure I create a competitive opportunity for both kids
to show they can fit in and we’ll go with the best guy and it’s going to make our quarterback position better certainly.”
Flynn started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2008 with Packers. In his four-year association with Packers, he started only two games and the lack of experience might go against him.
However, Carroll is not up for making his decision on the basis of how both players have performed in the past. Instead, the head coach wants to give equal opportunities to both of them to prove their respective abilities and believes that the starting role
should be earned.
