Seahawks starting quarterback competition: Competition is stiff, says OC Darrell Bevell – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks are yet to decide who their starting quarterback will be in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season, but this tale is regularly spiced up by the team officials, who keep on presenting their views about the situation without actually spilling the beans.
Earlier, head coach Pete Carroll kept the cards close to his chest and, refrained from telling who will be their starter while mentioning that all players are capable of winning the role.
Seahawks have three options for the position. They might go with, Tarvaris Jackson, who was their starter last year as well. They could also trust, Matt Flynn, who has just joined the team after playing four seasons as Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers backup. The third option is to go with rookie Russell Wilson, though that seems unlikely.
Carroll has made it clear that all three quarterbacks will be given equal chances to prove their talent. These quarterbacks did get opportunities during organised team activities, but Seahawks have still not made their final call.
As they are heading to training camp, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has shared his views on the quarterback situation. He, too, did not tell who their starter quarterback will be, but Bevell maintained that the competition is very stiff and that every player has equal chance of becoming the starter.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Bevell said:
“We’re pleased with all three of them. They’ve all handled themselves pretty well. They all performed pretty well in the OTAs and the minicamp.”
He added:
“I think right now it’s a pretty stiff competition. And that’s what we’re looking for.”
Bevell is of the view that the competition will make the starter respect his position and, he will go the extra mile to retain the number one spot and prove his selection throughout the season. He said:
“No. 1 is to find the best guy. No. 2 is to be able to have them compete for it, because obviously any time you compete for it you become harder and more prepared and more ready for whoever comes out the other end of that type of competition.”
He added:
“So it’s just preparing them for what the season is going to hold.”
