Sean Burnett not asking for four-year contract, explains his agent - MLB Update
Free agent reliever, Sean Burnett was earlier reported to be looking for a four-year deal in free agency.
Before the news gets viral and results into abandoning of interest shown by some organisations for his acquisition, his agent has explained that the rumour has no connection with reality.
His agent elaborates that Burnett has not made his intent public yet. Furthermore, he takes the opportunity to claim that a number of clubs are eager to acquire him, but nothing has been decided so far.
Burnett played for the Washington Nationals in the last season. As a part of their successful campaign until completion of the regular season, his contributions were commendable.
Late in the innings, he time-and-again produced wins for their starters.
It is not yet clear whether the Nationals are serious in retaining him.
Especially his being in the free agent market makes it less likely that the Nationals will sign a contract with him, because some other organisations might also be interested.
The fact he is a left-hander can motivate teams to pursue him whole-heartedly in the market.
Even the Nationals have a shortage of left-handed relief pitchers after Tom Gorzelanny has been non-tendered at the conclusion of Friday’s deadline by them. It is possible that the Nationals re-sign one of the two pitchers namely Burnett and Gorzelanny.
Agent of Burnett has hinted that they are reviewing options available and entertaining interests of the teams for the acquisition of the reliever.
“We are very pleased with the amount of interest in Sean, and look forward to this process playing itself out,” Burnett’s agent said.
Commenting on the remours about Burnett’s demands, he termed all of them fake and manufactured without any basis.
“Those words have never come out of my mouth nor Sean’s,” he said. “We are not seeking a four-year deal, and it’s crazy to hear such rumors out there. Complete fabrication by someone.”
It is easy to conclude from the words of the agent that negotiations between Burnett and various teams are going on.
It remains to be seen the chances that the Nationals will finalise an agreement with him.
It will be interesting to see what comes out about Burnett in the next couple of days from the free agent market.
