Sean Monaghan nails Romaro Johnson, defends streak and grabs career’s first title – Boxing News
Sean Monaghan, as it was predicted, grabbed an impressive eighth-round technical knockout win over American pounder Romaro Johnson, in a 10-round bout to grab his career’s very first title, the WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight gold.
The bout was held on Thursday June 14, 2012 and the above duo headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment. The ring for the extravaganza was set up at Roseland Ballroom, New York, United States and the night
was co-headlined by the much anticipated non-title 10-round welterweight bout between Thomas Dulorme and Alberto Herrera.
Sean, 30, was entering in his short career’s 14th bout and boasted an undefeated streak. The odds, from the very beginning, were in favour of the Irish pounder Monaghan as he was entering the ring with a flawless resume.
This was Sean’s very first title bout and by grabbing a win and above all the WBC continental Americas light heavyweight gold, the orthodox pounder has attracted much attention within the division.
His Thursday night opponent was not that much of a threat. Even though Johnson had the slight experience advantage on his side, the American pugilist was coming from a four-bout lose streak, a facet more than enough for Sean to get motivated and confident.
Moreover, Sean possessed pretty decent knockout proficiency as compared to Romaro. Monaghan has pinned eight of his opponents by knockout whereas Johnson has collected just six wins by knocking the opponent out cold.
From the very beginning of the bout, it was Sean who set the pace and started things off in an intimidating manner. With first title bout, the Irish pounder really put forth the boxing fans an impressive show and collected much praise afterwards.
Sean nullified Romaro’s reach advantage easily and frequently connected his jabs to Johnson’s body and face. Till the fifth round, Sean stunned Romaro with powerful knockout jabs so much so that in the last seconds of the fifth round a huge wave of powerful
jabs stunned Romaro for a while.
As a result Johnson lost his ground and fell on the ring floor. Romaro was not finished yet and with the start of the sixth round unleashed his might with full force inflicting as much damage possible.
With Sean’s continuous targeted battering Romaro got fatigued and worn out so much so that after getting flattened on the ring floor by receiving a raw powered jab from Sean, Johnson’s camp threw in the towel and decided to leave the ring.
The referee took the advice into consideration and later on announced Sean as the winner and the new owner of the vacant WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight title.
With this win, Sean has grabbed his 14th victory and ninth via KO whereas Romaro has received yet another loss, seventh to be specific.
