Sean O’Loughlin of Wigan Warriors pleased by his side’s Challenge Cup glory – Rugby League news
Wigan Warriors’ skipper, Sean O’Loughlin acknowledges that the 28-18 victory at the Headingley Stadium in Wembley over the Leeds Rhinos is better off than all the previous such wins.
According to him, this Challenge Cup victory in such a long time is more special because it is coming in after 16 long years of waiting.
With this title under their belt, the league toppers could not bid farewell more perfectly to their departing coach, Michael Maguire who will wrap up his two-year term with Wigans. He was also delighted to see his outfit finally making it through with the
Challenge Cup glory on Saturday night.
While paying tribute to his injured players who remained on-field despite some major injuries, the departing coach acknowledged that it was a team effort that has led to this special moment in history.
While speaking about this distinguished victory by the Wigans, O’Loughlin stated, “Last year was special because it was the first trophy we'd won for a long time but the fact that Wigan have had a proud history of winning the Challenge Cup does make it a
lot more special. You're treading in the footsteps of a lot of great players and great teams that have gone before you. As special as the Grand Final is, the history the club has with the Challenge Cup probably made it that little bit more.”
Jeff Lima who has inspired Wigans to their Challenge Cup title, had doubled his score within 24 minutes of the game. As the game stepped into the last 10 minutes of the clash, he sprung back to life which swept him to win the Lance Todd Trophy and be the
man of the match. Lima’s contribution to the game was huge and carved for him a moment to be proud of always. According to him it was just fulfilment of his job responsibilities at best.
When asked about this unique moment in his career, Lima said that he is overwhelmed with this feat, but is completely out of words to express the feeling completely.
