Sean Williams on the New York Knicks radar – NBA News
The New York Knicks are still not done with their roster building, and big man Sean Williams is the most recent player on their radar.
A source close to the roster building plans has disclosed to ESPNNewYork.com that the Knicks are interested in signing Williams as a back up to forward Amar’e Stoudemire, to give the Knicks front court some added depth. Currently,
the Knicks do not have any big man to back Stoudemire up.
Williams could be well suited to the Knicks, who have a strong front court combination with centre Tyson Chandler flanked by Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony on both sides. However, as soon as the first group takes the benches,
the Knicks face depth issues.
Williams, who is a forward/centre, will be a good addition to their roster and will cover up for valuable minutes while Stoudemire takes rest. Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas are signed onto the Knicks roster as backups for the front
court but both are nearing the end of their careers and in their late thirty’s. Their value to the team for next season is anyone’s call.
Williams, 6 foot 10, has played 4 seasons in the NBA. He started his career with the New Jersey Nets, and played for the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics last season. He played only 8 games for Dallas before being traded
to the Celtics, who needed a replacement for Jermaine O’Neal after he was sidelined with injury.
Williams played only three games for the Celtics, and averaged 3.6 points and 2.3 rebounds over the course of the past season while averaging 9.7 minutes per game, though he played more minutes with the Celtics (14.0).
Williams was traded to the Houston Rockets by the Celtics as part of a three team trade that sent Courtney Lee from the Rockets to the Celtics. Houston released him after that, making him a free agent for teams to sign.
Before the New York rumour, Williams was said to be in talks with the Miami Heat for a backup role for the next season.
